Hitchcock makes use of The Birds to build suspense by taking his time. Hitchcock establishes Brenner and Daniels relationships long before any events occur. The film has memorable supporting roles that are played by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former girlfriend, Annie. The screenplay was adapted by popular writer Evan Hunter, better known under the name, Ed McBain, from a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier. The use of electronic sound rather than a music score proved to be extremely effective. Hitchcock used research to prepare for his film about an eerie real-life assault of herringwaters that smoked in Capitola (California) during the year 1961. It was thought that poisoning with diatoms caused the extreme aggression of birds when they consumed anchovies.
